Musical Thesis: Ryan Adams “Ashes and Fire”

At the center of every album is a musical thesis. Ryan Adams’ “Ashes and Fire” is dedicated to all those moments in life you wish you could burn it down and start again. We all know those moments. They seem hopeless. You seem backed into a corner and the only way to get a clean break is to start all over again. In this life, we don’t get too many of those opportunities. Often, when forced into these situations, we are saddled with the burden. Adams offers a view where this doesn’t always have to be the case.

You can rebuild love. You can stabilize your career. Relationships can be planted elsewhere. The things that used to bring you joy can be rediscovered. Your life changes and your circumstances can be afforded the same opportunity. “Ashes and Fire” is a declaration to the belief. All of us, no matter our taste in music, should be head over heals for such encouragement. I, for one, know I am.

Mr. Adams does concede a point though. There are some things you will never get back. Those are the hardest facts to handle. They take time. If we are strong enough, we can endure. To varying degrees, hopefully we will all be delivered to the end of struggle with perspective and understanding. At the end of the day, I think this is the best we can hope from any circumstance in our life. It is so reassuring to run across an artist who understands this.

Be good to each other,
