Sharing the good: Meet the Patient Innovation

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure to attend a class at Católica Lisbon School of Business and Economics with Pedro Oliveira, the founder of Patient Innovation, the most amazing project on Innovation and Collaboration I’ve ever seen. I felt the need to do something to help it and decided to spread the word and let more people know about this amazing initiative.

Patient Innovation (www.patient-innovation.com) is an open platform and social network for patients and caregivers of any disease to share solutions they developed to help them cope with the challenges imposed by their disease or health condition. Their vision is that any patient or caregiver is a potential innovator. It makes a lot of sense as one of the most common ways to innovate is to create something in a great need context!

At Patient Innovation, patients and caregivers are encouraged to share their (mostly uncommon) findings on how to live better with their disease and share it with others.

One of the most amazing examples that I saw on the website was from Louis Plante, the creator of Frequencer ™. Louis Plante is a patient with Cystic Fibrosis. At the age of 26, he began working on a device capable of generating low pure frequencies. Louis thought this could help him improve his pulmonary clearance treatment.

In 2008, an examination of the left lung of Louis presented a serious infection in the upper lobe, his doctor decided to schedule a new operation. However, two weeks later another test showed a surprising result: there were no signs of infection. This was due to the use of his low frequency device since he did not take any medication. A year later, the same situation happened, and the doctor recommended that he repeat his treatment.

Louis Plante created Dymedso in 2002, introducing its technological product, the digitally controlled acoustic airway clearance device, the Frequencer ™.

Four years of research, development and clinical trials afterwards, Frequencer was sold to hospitals and was the first device that applied to the chest of a patient, emits vibrations of low resonant energy consumption, reduces the viscosity of the mucus allowing its flow.

Frequencer ™ is a digitally controlled acoustic airway cleaning device that enables bronchial drainage by inducing vibration in a patient’s chest wall. The device provides a milder, less painful form of therapy for patients than the traditional “clap” method of postural drainage therapy and is less demanding for physiotherapists responsible for providing this therapy.
