Looking Ahead

Hi. So….like many people, I’m less than thrilled by the choices in the upcoming presidential election. However, I do like to look on the bright side of things, and if there is one thing this election cycle has highlighted for me, it is the importance of education, and of looking ahead, to our future as a people. This has been said by many great people before, and forgive me for stating the obvious, but I so strongly believe that educated people that know their rights and that are at peace with and IN COMMUNICATION with each other and with their representatives CAN improve conditions. It is tempting to get apathetic — I have been to camps in Sri Lanka where living conditions ripped my heart in two; I have been to streets in Los Angeles where the mere act of survival is an accomplishment. But there are so many incredible people out there that ARE making a difference, and it is very clear to me how far-reaching the effects of education and communication are. So my own personal choice is not to be disgruntled by the state of the world, or by the state of the government, or by the state of media at this time. It’s my world too. Instead, I choose to look to the future and to help those activities that promote education and greater understanding for all. These, I believe, are the gems, and put together, they do add up to our great fortune as a people. I am not trying to sound self-righteous or naïve; I understand the scope of the issues that face us in the world today, but I did want to add my voice and share what I believe as a citizen. Thank you for reading. :)
