This is probably the most comprehensive explanation on what happened and what is happening in Crimea that I’ve seen. I’m bookmarking it for future reference. I can’t count the times that I’ve had to explain this to people who have asked me what I think. In the build-up to Russia taking control of Crimea and even after the fact, I had a few opinion pieces at the time that were published in The Moscow Times sharing my perspective of what was going on. The United States getting actively and openly involved in replacing the government in Ukraine was and is a huge mistake. The U.S. overtly and covertly being involved in the regime change of other countries is almost always a mistake. There’s a big difference between spreading American values (life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, all men are created equal, etc.) and ‘Americanizing’ other countries for power and profit.
