The idea that suffering is wrong is a religious idea. If there is no God, and no meaning to life, why would anyone care to moralize about how intolerable suffering among animals, apart from poking holes in various theological ideas? The fact that the suffering of animals bothers us existentially, is evidence that humans stand outside the natural order in ways that could be described as divine or supernatural.
