Advent of CTF 2024 — Day 20: Lost Santa

Approaching our last few challenges, we have our final OSINT Challenge for this event!! Day 20, we have this fun little challenge that involves a little bit of streetview and reverse image searching.

Ok now we know that we have an image which is this, and we have to find the coordinates closest to it.

So first I just plug this image in my favorite super weapon for OSINT challenges, https://www.duplichecker.com/reverse-image-search.php

The ones I boxed with red are the ones that I generally use when trying to find a specific image, but when I am trying to find locations in Eurasia-ish regions, I usually use yandex, I recall this from an earlier CTF event this year and just some few techniques I learned for example when trying to find buildings you can specifically size the image scope to the building that you’re trying to find but I digress — we continue the hunt for this challenge on TinEye and Google.

These were the results as followed:

Tineye unfortunately had nothing, so it’s unlikely that this is a duplicated image.
Now were talking…

With Google lens, we manage to get a general location which was the “Red Rock National Conservation Area” and I basically just searched for this on Google Maps and stumbled on this first area which was pretty interesting.

This was my first avenue for searching.. and I basically scoped out the walls that would make up the zig-zag and the pattern of them being placed differently.

At first I thought this would be a possible place to put my search, but it ended up not being it and I realized it pretty quickly with how the bricks are placed. So I began to search again, until I noticed…

Hey, this looks sort of zig-zaggy and theres also those same exact plants, but I messed up big time and went on a wild goose chase.

I’m not sure if you can see it, but I placed it on that small circle dot bellow the placement I made, and it sent me to an entirely incorrect location, and I was frustrated because there isn’t any other info besides it being Red Rock Canyon, even instagram posts said so — I did more digging after a few more minutes and re-tried this location but went to the street instead of the circle photo views.

And yes!! We got the flag for the last OSINT challenge!! csd{36.117,-115.445} — now let’s move forward onto the next challenges!! (spoiler, I suck at web/pwn so this was my last solve :P).

I’d like to thank the entire team at the CyberStudents discord server for making these wonderful challenges! I hope to do better next year, good game to all that participated!
