There is absolutely no doubt that Hubble destroys amateur ground based telescopes with ultra-deep sky images, revealing galaxies too small to resolve by amateur telescopes. It is also known that Hubble can take incredibly stunning images of planetary bodies since there is virtually no atmosphere in its orbit. Like this incredible image of Saturn.
That being said, Hubble is becoming nearly matched by ground based amateurs who use incredibly sensitive ccd cameras and sophisticated image processing software to capture typical deep sky objects (like those in the Messier’s Catalog) Below is an image of The Trifid Nebula (M22). Compare the image taken with Hubble (below) to this one on Astrobin and tell me what you think!
