You don’t need a data-driven framework to understand emotions. Thoughtful, observant people have done this without a frmework for millenia and it’s the basis for Buddhism.
The most important factor in understanding emotions—especially others’—is caring to. The second is empathy and the third is practice. It’s great to have an emotional framework to help be thoughtful (I recommend Dr. Ekman’s, for a start) but it’s not a requirement. Unfortunately, what industry leaders lack most are the first and third, and too often, even the second.
