You do realize it was the DEMOCRATS in the South in the 50’s and 60’s that supported segregation don’t you? Or did you not research this claim at all: “ In fact, this “small government” ideology is a lingering by-product of the racist counter-ideology expressed by conservatives in the 1960s in response to civil rights: the federal government shouldn’t restrict the rights of black people, but if racist politicians in the Louisiana legislature want to allow business owners to enforce a “No Colored People” policy, then the “big, bad” government should simply stay out of it, according to this troubling mindset.”
In other words, it wasn’t Republicans or Libertarians or “small government ideology” that was racist…it was the very people who now claim to represent minorities. And it was the Republicans who fought for racial equality — seriously. Lincoln was the first Republican president. I seem to recall an actual WAR happening during his presidency that resulted in the end of legal slavery in the US. And before his assassination, there were plans to essentially provide “reparations” to former slaves so that they wouldn’t end up in virtual slavery after the soldiers left. After his assassination, Johnson-a Democrat, pushed for restoration of the seceding states WITHOUT protection for the former slaves. This has been the pattern of the parties all along, the Republicans fight for individual rights regardless of race, wealth, etc. and the Democrats fight to keep the entrenched power structure. Republicans are called “conservative” not because they want things to stay the same, but because they want things to be run the way the Constitution says they are supposed to be run. Republicans are classical Liberals while the Democrats (and what we call liberals today) are basically Marxist.
At least, that is what Republicans used to stand for, used to fight for, used to be. With the nomination of Trump, after a campaign based primarily on fomenting discord and fanning the flames of racial and economic envy, I don’t think the party still holds to those ideals. Thus the rise of the Libertarians.
True Bernie supporters probably shouldn’t vote for Gary Johnson, but that’s because he is for personal liberty and personal accountability, while Bernie promises that “big Daddy Government” will take care of everyone and everything (a promise previously made in a number of other countries that went on to become failed states…).
