I don’t think the issue is Game of Thrones per se. If ours was a truly equal society, a single TV series based in a faux Europe without people of color wouldn’t be much of an issue. The problem I think — and please correct me if I’m wrong — is that GoT is part of a larger pattern of exclusion in our media. Just like any particular traffic stop could legitimately be a cop doing his job, the larger pattern of PoC being pulled over (and harassed or harmed) in disproportion to white drivers is evidence of racism in policing. Likewise with GoT, it is a show that fits a larger pattern, where PoC don’t exist and if they do it’s as slaves to be rescued by a white savior. And as part of a larger pattern, it’s hard not to see how it is perpetuating that pattern, especially given is enormous success.
