Your Carbon Footprint — “Matters for a Different Reason”

You can’t fix climate change. But here’s how personal carbon footprints drive meaningful change.

China just produced more coal in a single day than ever before. According to the BBC, that single day of coal will put out roughly the same emissions as Ireland does in a year.

Against that backdrop, individual climate action and personal responsibility seem pretty inconsequential.

Some people have even gone as far as to call individual carbon footprints “deceptive” and “a sham”, which is understandable.

But there’s another side to this debate, one which I wanted to delve into in more detail.

Partly it’s for my own sanity. I’d like to think my actions matter as part of a bigger whole. I eat vegan, keep my consumerism in check, and am much more likely to put on a jumper than crank up the heating.

So I wanted to see if any of the arguments in favour of watching my own carbon footprint make sense, or…
