The hidden truth behind Whey Protein powders

Did you ever take a commercial protein powder? Are you currently using them? Then probably reading this article is not going to be a pleasant experience. / Text by Paolo Roy

Let’s start by asking these simple questions:

  1. Do you know what your whey protein powder actually is made of?
  2. Have you ever taken a few minutes to read and research the ingredients?
  3. Do you ever ask yourself why it tastes so sweet — and you probably know it’s not sugar that makes it taste this way?
  4. Do you know that it is alarmingly harmful to your body?

It’s harmful basically because it is so artificially sweet. In fact, it may be better for your body if your protein powder would be sweetened with sugar.

Yes, with white sugar.

Hey, and nobody is lying you. I have checked tens, if not hundreds of whey protein supplements and all of them are clear like water. Everything is written down. Albeit in small words, in the most remote corner of the label. But it’s there.

But let me stress: the harmful element it’s not exactly whey protein.

In fact, whey protein is good and beneficial for your body. Mainly if you are training, have an active life or you are trying to cut weight with an high protein diet.

Let me introduce you to the real enemy

Have you ever bought whey protein from,,,,… or any other major merchant? Then the chances are that the real enemy has already entered your body at some point or another.

The enemy name comes in a lot of forms. Here are a few: Sucralose, aka Splenda, ZeroCal, Sukrana, SucraPlus, Candy’s, Nevella, etc.

“It won’t be as bad if the most known companies use it” –you may think, right?

Well I am going to let you judge for yourself.

The approval for Sucralose was given after the FDA supposedly reviewed more than 110 animal and human safety studies, but as you’ll soon find out, of these 110 studies, only 2 were human studies, and the longest study was conducted for 4 days.

Now just tell me: For how long have you been taking sweetened whey protein powders? For more than 4 days?

Let me reply to this answer myself. I have been taking Sucralose uninterruptedly for 2 years. Do you want to know the consequences? Let’s hear first what the doctors have to say about it:

However, the study mentioned above, published in the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health, found even further disturbing news besides weight gain –fat gain attributed to Sucralose/Splenda consumption:
· Reduces the amount of good bacteria in your intestines by 50%.
· Increases the pH level in your intestines, which decrease the amount of nutrients you can absorb. (In other words, if you take Sucralose don’t break your back eating clean and rich food –your body will be wasting lots of vitamins, minerals, aminos, proteins…)
· Affects a glycoprotein in your body that can have crucial health effects, particularly if you’re on certain medications
· They also found unmistakable evidence that Sucralose (Splenda) is absorbed by fat, contrary to previous claims.
It’s truly disturbing that Sucralose (Splenda) can destroy up to 50 percent of your healthy intestinal bacteria, as these bacteria help maintain your body’s overall balance of friendly versus unfriendly micro-organisms, and support your general health. Many people are already deficient in healthy bacteria due to choosing highly processed foods.

Even more shocking, the absorption of Splenda into the human body was studied on a grand total of 6 men! Based on that one human study, the FDA allowed the findings to be generalized as being representative of the entire human population. Ridiculous, right?

The FDA claims they reviewed over 110 studies conducted on Splenda. What they don’t tell you is that 108 of those studies were on animals. And even so, those animal studies reveal plenty of problems, such as:

· Decreased red blood cells –sign of anemia– at levels above 1,500 mg/kg/day
· Increased male infertility by interfering with sperm production and vitality, as well as brain lesions at higher doses
· Enlarged and calcified kidneys (McNeil stated this is often seen with poorly absorbed substances and was of no toxicological significance. The FDA Final Rule agreed that these are findings that are common in aged female rats and are not significant.)
· Spontaneous abortions in nearly half the rabbit population given sucralose, compared to zero aborted pregnancies in the control group
· A 23% death rate in rabbits, compared to a 6% death rate in the control group

And that’s not all. Let’s hear what James Turner, the chairman of the national consumer education group Citizens for Health has to say about it:

This report followed accepted policies and procedures and the results make clear the potential for disturbing side effects from the ingestion of Splenda. It is like putting a pesticide in your body.

The symptoms you will suffer

–or are you already suffering

Due to the neglecting attitude that federal agencies are having with sucralose –don’t forget that it is a multi millionaire business– consumers, doctors and scientists have been trying to join together to fight against sucralose and to divulge some of the side effects and consequences of taking sucralose on a long time basis.

The website lists a variety of consumer’s symptoms and testimonials, such as:

· Skin: Redness, itching, acne, swelling, blistering, weeping, crusting, rash, eruptions, or hives (itchy bumps or welts). These are the most common allergic symptoms that people have, but there’s more
· Lungs: Wheezing, tightness, cough, or shortness of breath
· Head: Swelling of the face, eyelids, lips, tongue, or throat; headaches and migraines (severe headaches)
· Nose: Stuffy nose, runny nose (clear, thin discharge), sneezing
· Eyes: Red (bloodshot), itchy, swollen, blurred vision or watery
· Stomach: Bloating, gas, pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, gastrointestinal problems or bloody diarrhea
· Heart: Palpitations or fluttering Joints –Joint pains or aches
· Neurological: Anxiety, dizziness, spaced-out sensation, depression
· General: Weight gain, blood sugar increase, seizures.

And we still haven’t arrived to the most relevant consequences…


Even being a very controversial topic some doctors have a very clear position. Dr. Josh Axe, for example, is a very reputable “food doctor” who has been working for lots of USA athletes –including Michael Phelps. When he is asked if the Sucralose can produce cancer, he goes straight and to the point:

Can Splenda cause cancer? First, remember that chlorine is one of its ingredients. Any animal or human that consumes chlorine on a regular basis is at risk for developing cancer. The Merk Manual and OSHA Harzardous Waste Handbook states that chlorine is carcinogenic (means causes cancer) and emergency measures should be taken when exposed via swallowing, inhaling or through the skin.

If you are only exposed to a small amount of chlorine on occasion, your body can eliminate chlorine through detoxification channels like your bowels, kidney’s and liver. But if you consume it daily, chlorine could increase cancer risk.

My personal history

Three years ago I started working out seriously. I began with bodybuilding and a few months later I added 2 boxing lessons per week to my fitness plan. As I was training 5 days per week, I decided that it was time to think seriously about eating clean and highly nutritious foods.

As you’ll be guessing, this is when I came across and started consuming whey protein (and also sucralose/Splenda, unfortunately).

In this picture my body still was suffering because of sucralose. Taken 1 year ago, more or less.

During almost 2 years I had been taking on average, 1,4 sweetened whey protein powders per day (2 on bodybuilding days, 1 on rest and boxing days).

But the most relevant point of this history is that after a month of taking sweetened whey protein supplements I started suffering from huge migraines that most of the time left me completely KO’d.

I mean, once a week I had strong headaches that blurred my overall vision and made me completely lose my peripheral vision. Usually I was at work and had to say to my boss that I was not able to continue working as I was not even able to see my screen. I basically had no choice but to go home, close all the windows and lay in a dark room and wait on my bed for a few hours for the migraine to disappear. Are you able to imagine how annoying it was having one of these crisis per week?

The doctors: “Learn to deal with it”

Obviously I visited countless doctors. Neurologists, Osteopaths, Chiropractics, etc. I also had a TC scan on my head to discard some kind of cancer or neurological problem. After spending lots of time and money, do you know what the doctors told me?

“Learn to deal with it. There’s no solution for migraine crisis”, and they gave me Maxalt and other tryptamine-based drugs to reduce the strength of the crisis.

I decided to refuse “common” doctors help

Really? I will have to be my whole live dealing with a weekly migraine that effects my work and basically my life day to day? I will have to take strong drugs on a weekly basis? No way.

Docs told me that migraine crisis have no solution… The only remedy was taking strong drugs to mitigate the crisis

I decided to try “alternative” medicine. Since I always thought that food and habits are very important in our overall balance, I went to meet some kind of alternative doctor who, even having a degree in medicine, was specialized in alternative therapies.

He went straight to the point: “Have you added anything to your daily diet or changed anything else in your life immediately before the migraines started?” “Well — I told him — I started boxing, which sometimes I have muscular contractions, but the physiotherapist and the chiropractic already discarded muscular or bones problems”.

“And what about your alimentation?” –he replied.

Ding, ding, ding!

“I starting eating better, more vegetables, lean meat, brown rice, I quit eating sugar, bad fats, I added whey protein… So I’m quite sure the problem is not coming from here”, I replied.

After asking me what kind of supplements I was taking (it was only chocolate whey protein) he told me he wanted to see the label of my protein powder. At that time I was using Impact Whey Isolate in Chocolate Smooth flavor, so we checked the ingredients list on website.

“Stop taking protein powder, and come back to visit me in 30 days”, he told me.

And do you know what? It simply worked like a charm. I never –EVER– had another migraine crisis. On my next visit to the doctor I seriously wanted to hug him. My problem was finally solved after two years of suffering!

But I still had one remaining question I wanted to ask him… “I never will be able to take whey protein again?”

He laughed and told me: “I’m 99% sure that the whey protein is not the problem. You already told me that you have been having milk for years without any health issues. The problem is on the additives, and I’m quite sure that sucralose is the one causing your migraine crisis. You are taking sucralose daily and on big doses”.

And he was right. Whey protein was not the problem

The solution is so f**king simple

If you are concerned about the consequences of taking sucralose/Splenda on a daily basis and the side effects that is going to produce (or that is already producing) you only have to stop taking artificially sweetened whey protein.

That’s all. Full stop.

There is an alternative. Say “hello” to pure whey protein powders.

And you know why? On average the pure whey powders always have more protein per dose –and obviously, they are not toxic and dangerous like the ones you will be buying, dressed with that damn sucralose.

And that’s not all. In my case, taking pure whey protein made me increase my weight gains by 21,9%. A f*cking 21,9% more gains in one year than the previous 2, taking sucralose. Let me show you a screenshot of the app I use to track my gains:

And why? You may be thinking…

Well, my opinion is that without sucralose in my gut, my body is able to absorb more nutrients from the food I take. With the pH levels back to normality — due to the absence of sucralose — my body just works better.

By the way, as a secondary consequence, I also felt that my digestions were far better without sucralose. Have you ever felt things where difficult to digest and a sensation of fullness due to gases after taking your protein powder? Say “hi” to one of the sucralose’s side effects.

In my routine, nothing else has changed. I’m still lifting weights 3 days a week and having boxing lessons 2 times a week. I’m eating clean and the same amount as always. The only change is that I stopped taking artificially sweetened whey protein. I only take 100% pure whey protein –and sometimes a vegan protein blend.

And how to take it? Does it has a “tolerable” taste?

Well, as you may be suspecting it is not very pleasant to take a shake of pure whey protein. Mixed with water it tastes like… watery milk, maybe a little bit cheesy. I mean, it reminds me of how milk tastes, but a little bit different, less tasty. The taste is not bad at all, but you will have to get used to.

If you mix it with milk it would be much better. Your protein shake will taste… just like milk.

My choice

As I don’t like drinking too much milk (because of the saturated fats), my personal choice is a mixture of Impact Native Whey 95, maltodextrin and a big spoon of organic, fat lowered, cocoa powder.

Maltodextrin? Yes, maltodextrin is a high GI carbohydrate, easily mixable and slightly sweet that comes from corn starch. It makes the shake a little bit sweet and thicker. Plus, it lets me control the amount of carbs I take every post workout. For example, if I come from a boxing workout I will add a full scoop of maltodextrin; on weight lifting days I just add half scoop.

Oh by the way, you can buy it at (this one) at a ridiculous price.

Pure Cocoa? Well, who says no to chocolate flavor? I have to say though that it does not taste like chocolate, at least like common chocolate with milk. It has a strong and slightly bitter taste –it is more similar to dark chocolate. But I have to be honest: Once you get used to it you will love it. BTW, this is my favorite one (I have tried several ones and the taste of this one is amazing).

Hey and that’s not all. There’s people who talk about cocoa like a “miraculous food” or a “super-food”. The one I take, for example, has a 25% of protein (including arginine, leucine, and glutamine), oleic acid, stearic acid and other “good fats”, lots of minerals, antioxidants… It’s simply a great choice for serious bodybuilders, for people who train hard or for the ones that worry about their health.


The perfect morning green smoothie for bodybuilders and fitness lovers

If you are serious about bodybuilding probably you will be taking a couple of protein shakes per day. Some time ago I asked myself which was the perfect way to introduce a good amount of protein to my morning healthy eating routine. After some testing I found a great formula: fruits, green leaf vegetables, walnuts, oats and protein. All mixed. My perfect morning smoothie.

It has a great amount of low absorption carbs, fiber, protein, vitamins, minerals, omega 3 & 6, antioxidants… Well, the perfect way to start a day. I don’t want to go further into its benefits (you can google it) I will just explain a little bit how I do it.

  1. Fruits: quite self-explanatory. Usually I put some kind of vitamin C rich juice (made from orange, lemon or grapefruit) and season fruits, like melon, peach, strawberries, blueberries, etc.
  2. Green leaf vegetables: My personal favorites are spinach, chard, kale, collard… Pro tip: You can buy them on bulk and freeze them in small portions. Just add them frozen to the blender.
  3. Walnuts: A generous handful.
  4. Oat: You can just use common oats, but if you want to obtain a fine texture I recommend you use Instant Oats, a pure flour made of oats (very cheap!) that you can find at
  5. Protein: Your favorite pure whey protein. Sometimes I switch from pure whey protein to a vegan protein blend, just to diversify my protein sources. One of my favorites is this one I stated above from MyProtein.

Sometimes I add some ice cubes or a little of water if it’s too thick. I just mix everything with my Ninja Blender. If you are curios I bought it on Amazon, it’s this one:
