Assam is a state in India that is rich in history, culture, tradition, and biodiversity. One of the Seven Sisters States of North-East India, Assam has risen to be one of the most popular destinations. The world-famous Kaziranga National Park and Manas National Park, two of the World Heritage Sites, are located within Assam. There is a lot of history of ancient civilizations that came and passed through this Indian state too. A lot of inscriptions since ancient times can be found in some of the historical places around Assam.

Location and Climate

Assam is an Indian State situated on the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas, along the Brahmaputra and Barak River valleys. It has Arunachal Pradesh to the north and borders Nagaland and Manipur to the east. Mizoram, Meghalaya, and Tripura border Assam in the south and West Bengal to the west. It also shares international borders with Bhutan in the north and Bangladesh in the south. The capital of Assam is Dispur. One of the main features of Assam is that it contains 3 out of 6 physiological divisions of India. That is-The Northern Himalayas, The Northern Plains and the Deccan Plateau. The Brahmaputra River that flows within Assam is considered to be a life-line for the state. The ancient old river brings fertility to the lands and is the main reason for rainfall almost throughout the year.

Assam experiences a Tropical Monsoon Climate, with hot and humid summers and cool, dry winters. The temperature ranges between 35–38 degrees Celsius during Summers and between 8–10 degrees Celsius during Winters. Therefore, Assam experiences heavy rainfall and high humidity during summers and foggy winters, especially at night and in the mornings. Agriculture in Assam greatly depends on these rains. Spring and Autumn seasons are normally pleasant with moderate rainfall and temperature.

The Best Of Assam

There are many reasons that make Assam a great destination to travel and explore.

Firstly, Assam is pretty popular for its Tea. Each year, Assam Tea is produced in huge quantities and the shipments holding the tea products are distributed far and wide. Assam is also famous for its silk. There are basically three major types of silk produced in Assam-Golden Muga, White Pat and Warm Eri Silk. Almost 45% of the total agricultural population in Assam is engaged with silk production in Assam. It provides employment opportunities to hundreds of Assamese people.

Two of the most popular National Parks are located in Assam, with the status of a World Heritage Site. Kaziranga National Park and Manas National Park. These sites were directly responsible for the conservation of many rare and endangered species of the animal kingdom. The One-horned Rhinoceros, Wild-Water Buffalo, Pygmy Hog, Tiger and several species of Birds all found their ultimate habitat here. Assam is also one of the last habitats for Asian Elephants. The National Parks and Sanctuaries of Assam are also home to some of the rare species of trees and plants.

Assam was also the first site for oil drilling in Asia. The city of Dibrugarh is the main center of Oil and Natural Gas Industries. Guwahati, another city of Assam is one of the 100 fastest growing cities in the world and the gateway to North-East India.

Historically, Assam has seen many dynasties and wars go by over the years. Beginning with the Stone Age, evidence of human settlements from the prehistoric era is still present in some regions of Assam. There are many historical locations where inscriptions from as early as the 9th Century can be found. From the Danava Dynasty and Naraka Dynasty whose last ruler fought for the Kauravas, in the epic Mahabharata battle. The Battle of Kurukshetra. To the Gupta dynasty of Samudragupta, Varmanas, the Mlechchha Dynasty, and the Kamarupa Dynasty. All the way down the timeline where the Chutiya Dynasty, Kachari dynasty, Ahoms and Baro-Bhuyan dynasty lived in the rivalry. To the Colonial Era where the British took over India until they left. There is much history and all of this can be seen and understood much better in Assam.
