Organic Versus Non-organic Food: Why Change Your Diet?

For many of us, dietary practices are habits and routines we have acquired over the years. The food we love eating, our go-to dishes, and even our cooking practices — all of these are often deeply-ingrained habit, which is precisely why making a dietary change often proves to be difficult. Despite the difficulties of changing one’s diet, however, there are often some compelling reasons to make some dietary adjustments.

Switching to an organic food diet has been popular in recent years — and for good reasons. Here are some of the benefits of consuming organic food as opposed to eating conventionally-grown produce.

Why Go On An Organic Food Diet?

1. Organic food is healthier than conventionally-grown agricultural products. Research shows that organic produce contain significantly higher amounts of vitamins and minerals than its conventionally-grown counterparts. This can partly be attributed to the fact that organic farming necessitates growing agricultural products under the most optimal environmental conditions to ensure good yield, especially since pesticides and additives are not allowed.

2. Additives, often found in mass-produced food items, are not present in organic food. The thing about organic produce is that they are free from any artificial chemicals and ingredients — from farming to harvesting. This means that consuming organic products will lower your risks of suffering from various health problems that are often linked to food additives, such as heart disease, osteoporosis, asthma, and food allergies. In addition, you are also guaranteed that the food you are consuming is fresh, seeing that organic food items are free of preservatives, thereby prompting grocery store owners to always put a fresh batch on their shelves.

3. Organic meat is healthier. Despite the importance of a high-protein diet, many people are wary of consuming meat products due to the range of diseases often associated with meat items. However, pls note that the aforementioned health problems are not associated with meat products per se, but rather with the quality of the meat. Organically raised animals, unlike its conventionally-raised counterparts, are not exposed to antibiotics. This means that organic meat do not contain strains of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Also, since organically-raised animals are free-roaming, their meat often has lower fat content.

4. Organic food taste better. The problem with a lot of GMOs (genetically modified organisms), aside from the possible health risks, is that taste is often compromised in exchange for greater yield or resistance to pests. Since freshness is also often foregone (seeing as conventional food items are often laden with preservatives), the taste of conventionally-produced food products tend to be sub-par as compared to organic food items.

Switching to organic food might seem like a diet fad at first, but a closer look will reveal that there are actually merits in consuming organic produce/meat. Although making the dietary switch might entail additional food-related costs, these short-term expenses will most likely be off-set in the future when you reap the benefits of a healthier body.
