The 2-season Ozone Depletion and Interaction with Aerosol Campaign, or ZODIAC, is interested in sampling aerosols from natural resources from oceans and volcanoes through ice cores. Aerosols may be trapped in bubbles of air when snow turns into glacial ice, so it’s possible to collect samples dating many, many years back in the history of time.

The teams of atmospheric scientists are led by Lars Kalnajs and Peter DeCarlo. They run a dozen instruments 24 hours a day in order to compile all the data they want to collect in Antarctica because the continent is “at the frontier of aerosol science because it’s the least studied continent when it comes to aerosols” said Kalnajs.
