When DJ Mike Smoove was a teenager in the 1980s, like most kids his age, he loved having sleepovers. But instead spending the night at a friend’s house, he and his buddies would take their pajamas to a legendary Los Angeles roller skating rink where hip hop stars and teens rolled in the same circles.

World on Wheels, in the heart of the Mid-City neighborhood, was his world — and his bed — after his parents would drop him off at at 7 p.m. …
