Going Nuts Over What to Snack On?
It’s 2:45pm and you are starting to feel the 3 o’clock crash coming on. Your energy is dipping, you are starting to feel foggy, tired and in need of a snack in order to tide you over until dinner.
Not interested in any of the same vending machine options offered in the office lunch room, you start to wonder how you might take control over your mid-afternoon munchies.
Many of us find ourselves at the mercy of what is immediately available to us when it comes to having a snack. On the commute to work we drive by countless fast-food chains, coffee shops and gas stations, all of which offer a convenient solution to our hunger-driven decision making needs.
Then we have the vending machines that many an office have in place as a standard fixture. While some differ in quality and choice the majority of these food dispensers offer the standard soda selection, over-priced bottles of water and an assortment of processed potatoes and packets full of sugar.
When hunger strikes, what can you do to ensure that you do not have to resort to any of these desperate measures?
Taking a moment to plan out your snacks, by ensuring that you have healthier options available, is one way to silence the call from the vending machine.
When that afternoon snack-attack starts to well up inside, each of us has a go-to type of snack that we prefer.
Maybe you crave something sweet-tasting, or you like something with a good crunch-factor. Some like the soft and chewy type of snack, while others enjoy something salty. My personal preference happens to be something crunchy and salty!
Regardless of your preference, how can you plan ahead to make sure that you have the ideal-for-you snack on hand?
As you may have guessed, the solution is in the planning. Having a healthy and nutritious snack tucked away (hello mostly-empty desk drawer that holds a few paperclips and my stapler), will enable you to make those healthy choices as well as take back control over what options are available to you.
So based on your preferences, when you are doing your weekly grocery run, make sure you include the snacks that you know you will love, that are easy to transport and store at work, and will last for a few days at a time.
What would some of these healthier snacks look like? What will give you that flavour hit that you crave, but not compromise the overall successes of your health and diet goals?
I’m glad you asked!
Here is a great guide from nuts.com that shows you what you can reach for when that craving hits!
*of course for those of us that are vegan, make adjustments as needed. Make sure you also visit their site because they have an entire section for vegan snacks; you can also check out their Healthy Snacks page here, or their Healthy Snacks for Work page here!
So, when it comes to choosing healthier snacks, especially at work, stop going nuts over what to eat! Start eating them instead :)
