You’re Genetically Gifted

In the LeBron James Formula I talked about work ethic. But there is a statement from that article that has been stuck in my mind and I’ve been brewing on it for some time now: 
“…Most of you sit here and hate on the man (LeBron James) but what many of you fail to realize is how much work he has put in. Yes he has been genetically gifted as an athlete BUT we all have been genetically gifted with different attributes.”

Think about that.

We all have our strengths. We all have our gifts that we were given. You just need to be aware of who you are. Stop wishing and asking for things that you don’t have and start looking at who you are and what you do have. 
How many of you have looked at things that way? For some reason it’s human nature to want to compare ourselves to other people. Looking at what attributes we don’t have. What our weaknesses are. What materialistic things we don’t have.

While I admit I’ve found myself doing that at times, I find it extremely weird yet fascinating.

Why? Why do we look at our weaknesses? The word weak has a negative connotation as it is. The word makes me feel like I’m useless and can’t do anything. And that’s complete bullshit. It is for you too.

Why don’t you focus on your strengths? The things that make you, you. The things your really good at.

Scott Adams wrote almost 10 years ago ….

“If you want an average, successful life, it doesn’t take much planning. Just stay out of trouble, go to school, and apply for jobs you might like. But if you want something extraordinary, you have two paths:

1. Become the best at one specific thing.
2. Become very good (top 25%) at two or more things.”

All of you are very good at two or more things. Fuck you if you’re saying your not. Because you are.

Seriously nobody is that average that they aren’t good at anything. And if you are that average there’s a thing called practice and work. You know what you’d like to be good at or what you’d like to get better at. And if you really want to get better at something that takes hard work, discipline, and dedication along with patience and persistence. But wouldn’t it be more fulfilling to be working on your strengths and getting stronger than sitting around bitching about what you don’t have and focusing on your weaknesses?

Focus on your weaknesses and you’ll get weaker, focus on your strengths and you’ll get stronger.

Now yes there are times when you’ll have to bring up some weaknesses in order to enhance your strengths but don’t focus on the small things. I’m going to share this analogy with you. My mentor shared it with me but I’m sure it’s been passed on by many.

**Rocks, Pebbles, and Sand**

**The Story**

There was a philosophy professor who was giving a lecture. In front of him he had a big glass jar. He started off by filling up the jar with the big rocks and when they reached the rim of the jar he held it up to the students and asked them if the jar was full. They all agreed, there was no more room to put the rocks in, it was full.

He then picked up a tub of small pebbles and poured these in jar so that they filled the space around the big rocks. “Is the jar full now?” he asked. The group of students all looked at each other and agreed that the jar was now completely full.

The professor then picked up another container, this time it had sand in it. He poured the sand in between the pebbles and the rocks and once again he held up the jar to his class and asked if it was full. Once again the students agreed that the jar was full.

“Are you sure it’s full?” he asked. He finally picked up a bottle of water and tipped the water into the jar until it filled up all the remaining space. The students laughed.

The jar represents your life. The rocks are the important things that have real value — your family, your partner, your health, your children — things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter — like your job, house, car, clothes and so forth.

The sand is everything else — the small stuff.

If you fill the jar up first with the sand, you won’t have space for the pebbles or the rocks. The same goes for your life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Spend time with your family. Take your partner out dancing. Go for a good meal. There will always be time to go to work, clean the house, give a dinner party and fix the disposal. Take care of the rocks first — the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.

Rocks: Strengths
Sand: Shit that doesn’t matter

Focus on the rocks. Those are what make up the majority of who you are as a person. Those are your foundations. Fill your life and focus with the rocks. Pebbles and sand don’t do anything. They are nuisances.

Lets think bigger. I love mountains. I think they are gorgeous. If a mountain were to crumble you’d have a fuck ton of rocks. So in order to build your mountain you need to put those rocks together. Your life is that mountain. To climb it you need to do so one rock at a time. One step at a time. Climbing a mountain isn’t hard. I mean yes climbing something like mount everest is extrememly difficult. But, climbing a mountain is done one step at a time. One rock at a time. Yet not many people do it because when it gets tough they turn back. They forget why they started in the first place.

You’ll face many obstacles to get to the top of that mountain. Your strengths are what build you. They are what keep you climbing up that mountain. You keep making your strengths stronger and stronger with each step and soon enough you’ll have a mountain. Soon you’ll be at the top of that mountain.

Your weaknesses, those will keep you in the valley. Looking up asking what if or I wonder what it’s like up there.

I dare you to start climbing. Take your rocks and start climbing. One rock at a time. One step at a time.

You’re fucking strong. Use your strengths. I believe in you. Believe in yourself.
