Wake Up, Louis Dejoy. Stop Dismantling Democracy.
As soon as Donald Trump appointed Louis Dejoy to the role of Postmaster General, Dejoy launched a vicious attack on the fundamental structure of our democracy. Shortly after he took office on June 6, 2020, Dejoy cut employee overtime and removed mail sorting machines across the country.
In the spirit of the Trump administration, Louis Dejoy is a criminal. On September 6, The New York Times reported that employees of Louis Dejoy were incentivized with yearly bonuses to donate to candidates that Dejoy himself supported. This allegation comes one month after Dejoy lied to Congress saying that this was an “outrageous claim.” Dejoy himself is a megadonor to Trump’s campaigns, which some say explains he was appointed to lead an agency when he wasn’t even one of the original fifty-nine candidates.
At a time when the importance of mail-in voting is more pressing than ever, Dejoy has repeatedly shown the American people that his interests do not lie in the stability of the Postal Service, as he has argued. His interests lie instead in denying citizens across the nation their right to a fair vote. A right that is already routinely denied black, indigenous, and Latinx voters. Dejoy’s blatant intention to suppress voters is evident in his efforts to defund and privatize the United States Postal Service. Deliveries have already significantly slowed down throughout the country, jeopardizing people’s ability to receive life-saving medications and necessary paychecks.
It is time for Louis Dejoy to WAKE UP. The youth will not stand to see Trump’s fascism enabled. We will not stand to see attacks on postal workers’ rights. We are demanding Dejoy leave the USPS for the sake of a just election this fall, for the sake of our democracy, for the sake of every person who calls this country home. We and countless other organizers and groups are going to fight to make sure everyone has their voice heard and counted. We will not allow anyone to be silenced by people like Dejoy, and we will make sure he is wide awake until Dejoy leaves the USPS.
