What are the side effects of taking Tetracyclines?

These drugs have a teratogenic effect on small children and pregnant/lactating women. Tetracyclines cause permanent teeth staining (discoloration) and inhibits bone growth in small children (< 12 years old).

Superinfection may occur due the alteration of the normal flora of bacteria, it creates overgrowth of bacteria in the intestines, mouth, vagina, and pharynx

What are some special considerations for Tetracyclines?

Do not give with milk (including breast milk), dairy products, antacids, magnesium or iron

Take Tetracyclines 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals with a full glass of liquid.

Tetracyclines are an option for the patient/client if allergy to Penicillin
