Geoffrey Ndege

A few days ago, I woke up in the morning with a severe headache. While trying to see what was the reason for this health disaster, my mind struck what everybody often thinks as the first thing to do. That is, to call the people around us and inform them of such happenings.

Before I could reach for my phone, I remembered a statement I am so used to hearing and one which I have used once in a while. Every time I have heard some of my friends told about some unfortunate happenings by somebody else, they console the affected parties with the words that everything happens for a reason.

A lot of people globally are becoming concerned with their survival because of the rising population growth. A lot of these people believe that the earth is reaching its critical mass very soon. Critical mass is the maximum number the earth can support without scarcity of the necessities.

Today, the world population stands at about 7 billion people. This number is feared to hit the 10 billion mark by the year 2070. It is estimated that about 200,000 births are made every day around the world. Of course, it is a fact that the daily deaths are not that much now that we have made great strides to ensure access to healthcare is improved.

I recently attended the 2022 sustainability summit organized by KENCTAD at Nairobi’s Western Heights in the Westland area. The theme of the summit was the role of businesses in promoting environmental sustainability.

The objective of this high-level meeting was to enhance the aspect of responsible interaction between businesses and the environment so that the effects on the environment by these entities are kept at the bare minimum. Depletion and degradation of natural resources due to business activities have been largely due to the pressure meted on the business to meet the needs and demands of an ever-increasing population.

In July 2009, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie gave a ted talk titled “the danger of a single story.” I first listened to the talk somewhere in 2013 and since then, I have often listened to it a couple of times more. The whole idea of her talk centers on the concept of single perceptiveness.

In talking about how the rest of the world looks at her country, Nigeria through the single lens of the western media, Adichie seeks, in a way, to challenge people to have a wider perspective in terms of what they can accept as a true description of an entity, component, person, country, culture, tribe et cetera.

If anything, tribalism has been the black man’s biggest nightmare. And the danger that comes with that is that we turn out to be our greatest enemies. Tribalism ends up affecting so many other areas of our economies as incompetent people find themselves occupying offices they are not fit to occupy simply because they come from the same tribe as the boss at the top.

For instance, if it was true that Prof. Aggrey Thuo was denied the right to occupy an office he was qualified and competent to occupy at the Jaramogi University of Science and Technology simply because he wasn’t a local, is one that should worry us.

In the just-concluded Propak 2022 expo, one couldn’t miss being attracted to the Chatthe group stand at the Sarit center (Chatthe group is the holding company for Kibos sugar). Everything on the stand if not most of the products being showcased told a story you would want to listen to.

The story begins with the sugar which has been the synonymous thing with Kibos. The back integration of the company’s strategy to put the farmer king has reaped big benefits. It is interesting to note that the company has extension officers who work hand in hand with the farmers to ensure that the cane is planted as required to guarantee the highest quality of sugar.
