I believe that there is a silver lining to Trump’s antagonistic and childish relationship with the press.
Back in the days of G.W. Bush and the Iraq war there was a collection of Iraq war apologists who acted as scribes for the G.W. Bush administration line or Iraq. The most notorious of these was Judith Miller. Right behind her was Bob Woodward.
Miller and Woodward were practitioners of access journalism. Decision makers and players in the Administration gave them exclusive access in return for reporting that reflected the Administration view of reality.
Except for junk publications like Breitbart, we don’t have to worry about access journalism. The Trump administration views the press as an adversary. And the press is acting like an adversary. As they should.
If ever we needed something more than suck up, access journalism, it is now. The more that the Trump administration rants about the press as the enemy and denies them access, the more honest they will be.
We are not going to have to worry about the Trump Administration pary line reflected in CNN, or the pages of the Washington Post or the New York Times (although the corrupt Murdoch owned Wall Street Journal is another matter).
We may finally get a Washington Press Corp that actually has to do investigative reporting and actual work, since they are not going to be hand fed by the Trump Administration.
