In our post literate world being a writer can be difficult. Even writers with long distinguished careers can struggle to get by.
One of my favorite writers is the science fiction writer Ian McDonald. He write three young adult novels, presumably because it paid. I’m happy to say that he’s back to adult novels with his fantastic novel Luna.
Anyone who prospers in art (writing, music, painting etc…) realizes that it’s a business. You have to do what sells, not necessarily what you want. At least not all the time. Even then, not everyone has that commercial touch.
