I’ve followed John McCain’s career closely. He talked constantly about honor and principle. When running for President abandoned both. Cynically appointing Sarah Palin as his Vice Presidential running mate was the depth of his faults.

I have wondered, however, if anyone can run for President and be unsullied either during the election or after, as the promises of the election are tarnished by harsh political reality.

In the popular retrospective of McCain’s life he has been fortunate to die at a time when the President of the United States is a corrupt incompetent and an existential threat to the United States.

If McCain has become president, I would have disagreed with most of his policies and disliked his administration. But I do not think that McCain would seize dictatorial power, if he could. There is no doubt that this is Trump’s dream. All that holds Trump back is his core stupidity and incompetence.

Compared to Trump, McCain was a giant. Even George W. Bush, the author of a needless war in Iraq and massive destruction in the Middle East, is better than Trump. And let us recall that McCain was one of the few Republicans that criticized torture during the G.W. Bush presidency.

Like many of us, McCain did not live up to his own ideals and constructed a mythology where he was the hero. McCain’s virtues may be tarnished by his egotism and ambition. Yet in the end, I do believe that he was dedicated to serving his country, it’s history and it’s institutions. If this were McCain’s epitaph, I think that he would be satisfied.
