The majority of companies I’ve interviewed with have not gotten back to me to tell me that I would not be offered the job.

I interviewed with one company where I directly asked the HR recruiting person to get back to me. He looked me in the eye and promised to let me know when decision had been made. I heard nothing. I had to call them to find out what happened a couple of weeks later.

Basecamp is one of the few companies I know of that promises to get back to everyone who applies. In my experience, they have kept this promise. Unfortunately, this is rare.

Most companies treat the people who interview with them poorly. They show no recognition of the time and effort a candidate puts in to interview with them.

I had one company ask me to come in for two on-site interviews. Apparently somewhere in the second interview they decided not to make me an offer. All of a sudden everyone else I was scheduled to talk to was busy. They literally pointed me to the exit door and said goodbye. No one thanked me for coming in for two on-site interviews. No one ever got back to me (not that I would have wanted to work there after this experience).

Hours of white board questions and an attitude that the interviewee is lucky to be asked in for an interview make interviewing for technology jobs a pretty miserable process.
