There are ways that Trump can be attacked.
One of the strongest is to go after his business background. Run ads using his multiple bankruptcies, where Trump walked away with money while everyone else got the shaft. Talk about his fraudulent “Trump University”.
I would push this as hard as possible. Portray Trump as a crooked businessman who has skated through loopholes in the legal system and bankruptcy code.
The business angle has the advantage that Trump has a thin skin, especially when it comes to his supposed business prowess. Going after this will cause Trump to lose it and start ranting, which is never a good response.
I would also go after the fact that Trump is a conspiracy theorist. In fact, he’s jumped on most of the modern conspiracies, from 9/11 to Birtherism.
Sure some of his supporters are right there with him. But the point is to make Trump unacceptable to everyone else.
I would also portray Trump as a misogynistic racist. This may not a problem for many of Trump’s current supporters. But he can’t win an election with these people alone. If Trump is only acceptable to older white men, he cannot come close to winning a Presidential election.
I would also go after Trump for constantly talking about how the United States is a loser and is no longer a great country. Every time I hear this, I feel like Trump is insulting my country.
We are a great country. We are the most innovative country in the world. Other countries, like China, copy our technology (to use a polite term). We built the Internet and to this day are the largest presence on the Internet. China is using American microprocessors.
Trump is always talking about our weak military. This is ridiculous. We have the strongest military in the world.
I would go after Trump for insulting our country. I would portray this unpatriotic. Trump is constantly talking about how our best days are behind us and how only Trump can make us “Great Again”. We are a great country and we don’t need Trump to make us great.
Students from all over the world come to study at our Universities and many choose to stay in the United States to work in research labs and build companies. Immigration has huge (youge) problems, especially with H1-B Visas. But talented foreign born people have been an asset to the United States. They have helped build our economy and jobs. Trump would deny these people entry to our country.
I would also go after the fact that Trump knows very little about policy and so is not qualified as president. This is probably the weakest tack, since G.W. Bush also knew little about policy and that didn’t bother the majority of the voters in 2004.
For many Trump supporters, Trump is the protest candidate. They are unhappy with the way things have been going and where the world is heading. Trump is the big middle finger to the establishment.
I understand this. We all want to say “screw you” sometimes. But the cost of doing this for our country could be huge (youge). What an anti-Trump campaign must show is that a Trump Presidency will have an unacceptable cost and that Trump is an unacceptable candidate. An anti-Trump campaign must provide visceral imagery that shows that far from “making America great”, Trump will wreck destruction on what the United States has built in the 20th century.
In 2004 John Kerry allowed a draft dodger who had a drinking problem while in the Texas National Guard to lie about Kerry’s service in Vietnam. Kerry should have hit back hard. But his campaign was weak compared to what Karl Rove could marshal.
The Democrats need to stop being weak. They need to go after Trump and go full Karl Rove on his ass. If they do, Trump will go down in epic defeat. If they don’t, Trump may win the election. People know that they’ve been screwed and Trump is their primal scream.
Trump has been consistently underestimated. When he descended on the Trump Tower escalator people thought he was a buffoon who had no chance at the Republican nomination. Trump defeated a large field of candidates, including Jeb Bush and Scott Walker. Few expected this to happen.
Trump has shown that he should not be under estimated. To beat him will take a strong campaign. It remains to be seen if Hillary Clinton’s campaign has what it takes.
