What’s next for Chicago?

One of my core issues from the very beginning has been that we need term limits for the mayor because political dynasties always end up working to preserve themselves, not prioritizing serving the people.

So, yes, I think that Rahm deciding not to run is a good thing. Like he said today, it’s the job of a lifetime but not a job for a lifetime. I respect that he stepped down voluntarily, but I’m going to continue to work towards making term limits mandatory in the future, via a referendum on the ballot or whatever it takes.

But we now have a real choice. A chance to turn the page. What do you want the next chapter for Chicago to look like?

I’ll tell you what I want to see:

I want a world-class, open-enrollment school within walking distance of every family — that means investing in neighborhood schools.

I want to invest in violence prevention — community engagement, economic opportunity, mental health services — before adding more cops.

I want radical budget transparency so that we know exactly where our taxes are going. We shouldn’t have to guess and wonder — we should get a receipt.

If you want to see those things too, right now I really need your help to get on the ballot. We need 12,500 signatures. I’ve been hitting the pavement all week already — Hyde Park, Kenwood, Oakland, Lakeview, Logan Square — and before I’m done I’ll be visiting every one of the 77 neighborhoods in Chicago.

To help out this weekend, RSVP for our Facebook event. To help us collect signatures, please visit nealformayor.com/volunteer.

No matter what, it’s exciting to know that we are going to have new leadership in Chicago. Now’s our chance as voters to speak up and to show up. Please register to vote. Please turn out in February. Please make your voice heard — what’s next for Chicago?
