Would you be friends with a racist?

My general rule of thumb: If I would avoid/”unfriend” the person in real life, then I’m also going to cut ties online. I love respectful debate of ideas. I am bothered at the lack of discussion of ideas or policies in this election. But I also believe that supporting a candidate does not mean being like the candidate, or supporting everything about the candidate. And in this election year, I think more people are voting against a candidate they don’t like, rather than voting for a candidate they like. But if someone who I considered a friend started espousing racist views, or if they often refused to engage respectfully with people who do not share the same views as them, then I would avoid them in real life, and I am going to avoid them online.
