This list includes free software that can be used for aircraft conceptual design and analysis.

1. openVSP

openVSP interface

It is a parametric aircraft geometry tool, meaning you can change how the aircraft looks by changing the values of a few parameters. It allows the user to create 3D models of aircrafts defined by common engineering parameters.

For example, you can customize your wing design by changing the span, root chord, tip chord, sweep, dihedral, Aspect Ratio, airfoil, etc. The fuselage can be shaped by changing the length, cross-section, nose type, tail type, etc. For propellers, you can tinker with the radius, number of blades, direction, etc.

A model made using openVSP can be exported into various popular formats such as: .step, .stl, .obj, .x3d, .iges, etc.

2. Machup

Machup is a free, easy-to-use online software program that generates aerodynamic information for aircraft design. The program generates lift, drag, stability and trim data for any design you put into it. Machup4 and machup5 are web based GUI, allowing the user to make and analyze aircrafts using any browser.

3. XFLR5

XFLR5 is a free software tool that allows users to perform aerodynamic analysis on aircraft designs. It includes a variety of features such as airfoil design, wing analysis, and performance prediction. XFLR5 is known for its accuracy and ease of use, making it an ideal tool for both novice and experienced engineers.

4. FreeCAD

Most of the computer aided design software, such as solidworks, are not free. FreeCAD is a free and open-source 3D modeling software tool that can be used for aircraft design. It includes a variety of features such as parametric modeling, meshing, and simulation. FreeCAD is known for its flexibility and ease of use, making it an ideal tool for engineers who need to quickly iterate through different design options.

5. Onshape

Onshape is a cloud-based 3D modeling software tool that can be used for aircraft design (or any other design). You don’t need to download anything on your system. This makes onshape fast and easily accessible across devices. It includes a variety of features such as parametric modeling, collaboration tools, and version control. It is free for students. The free version for everyone else is also available, however, your designs will be public and visible to all.
