I realized this last week. To add to your advice, what replaces the ‘thing’ is in most cases a writer’s chance to portray an image of his thoughts in a simple phrase. Such an occurrence actually affords the writer a quick reference or a nickname, if I may, to refer to an otherwise complex thought being highlighted. The choice of this nickname or phrase qualifies the writer’s thought in a reader’s mind much more than any example.
