The title says it all folks.

This right here is my first ever blog post. It took awhile, but it’s finally here.

Exciting isn’t it?…Okay, okay. Settle down people. It’s not like Italy won the World Cup or anything. By the way, did I mention that I’m a crazed soccer fan? Excellent. Now that that’s been established we can move on… So! I’ll be honest. I’ve never really given the notion of blogging much thought. It could be because I don’t have a dog/cat to endlessly expose to world, or it could be because I have a hard time sitting down for longer than 10 minutes at times. However, I think the real reason surrounds the fact that I’ve just never been inspired to do so.

Let me take you back a couple of months. It was a dark, cold February evening, and for the millionth time I’m sitting at my desk asking myself the same old question. “Mike, where are you going in life?”…Hard one to answer isn’t it? And for the millionth time I came up with the same answer, “I don’t know. It’ll come to you”. It was this kind of agonizing, unproductive, back and forth dialogue, which went on between myself and I since graduating from Ryerson University in 2013.

Okay, so you got all that so far? First blog post, crazy soccer fan, no cat/dog to shamelessly blog about, should maybe get around to seeing if I have ADD, and went through a period of time being lost at sea, figuratively speaking of course.

Let’s go back even further now. Since the age of 12 I’ve been a die hard music fan/percussionist. If there’s one thing I know, it’s that my one true love was, is and always will be music. For me it’s one of the few things that highlights the beautiful moments, that life has to offer. In addition, it picks me up when I’m down, and it brings me to new heights when I’m in a good frame of mind. In short, to me it’s a form of medication.

So with all that in mind it should be of no surprise to you that I’ve performed in many musical groups, that I’m currently active in two bands, that I taught music for two years, and that music is something that will always be apart of me. Make sure you mark that one down. Put a couple of stars beside it too.

So…uh, where was I? Oh yeah! It was during my pursuit of playing music after university, that I could feel like there was something missing from the equation. Something else needed to be incorporated into my life, in order to take me to the next level. I had to acquire another skill that could not only compliment my musical abilities, but also give me another creative/technical outlet that I could be passionate about. Otherwise, what’s the point?

If the title wasn’t a bit of a give away, this is where the wonderful world of coding came in. Let’s go back to that February evening again. I had for months been flirting with the idea of coding. A few friends had mentioned this place to me called HackerYou. All I knew is that it was a programming bootcamp situated in Toronto, and that they had a fantastic reputation for teaching those interested in learning how to code.

It was during that February evening that finally something magical happened. I decided that I would pursue attending HackerYou, and take on web development. I had waited until the next available opening to apply to HackerYou, and within a few months I had successfully gotten in. This led to me taking some part time classes between May-August 2015 where we covered an intro to HTML5, CSS3, and a bit of Javascript/J-Query. However, it was always my goal to complete the full-time classes that HackerYou offers, over the course of an intensive nine week period. After completing the part-time classes, I then applied to the full-time classes, which brings me to where I am currently. I’m extremely proud to say that I am as I speak apart of HackerYou’s 8th full-time cohort. I’ll always remember that February evening, because since then I have yet to ask myself…”Mike, where are you going in life?”. Not only have I found something to propel me into an extremely fascinating career, but I have found a new art to latch onto.

One week has already come and gone, but within In the next eight weeks I’ll continue to learn/work on projects involving HTML, CSS, Wordpress, JQuery, and Javascript, I’ll be furthering my interactions with some of the most interesting people I’ve ever met in my life, I’ll continue to be taught by some of Toronto’s finest developers, and I’ll be advancing my life forward in all ways imagineable. I’ll continue to pour my heart into music just as I always have, but moving forward I’ll be doing so with a new found label attached to me. That label being, web developer. Saying that excites me every time.

For those reading this/interested. My future blog posts will be a bit more web/tech based. I know that doing so will require much research, and dedication with regards to writing about such areas of interest. However, I’m eager to get started on discussing such topics. It was important to me that I first tell you a bit about myself. You know. Who I am, what I love, where I’m going, but most importantly, what brought me here. I’ll use this as a means of discussing other things in my life as well, but for now web will be my primary focus.

First blog post down. That wasn’t so bad.
