What is Anger?

Bile, fear, torment, pain and anguish.

Anger is the deadly cocktail containing made with the most toxic ingredients.

It’s when you can’t see straight. When everything goes blood-red. Your heart pounds, your chest heaves, your skin crawls.

Sure, righteous anger can transform the world.

Anger against injustice and cruelty is the fuel that drives humanity towards a better future.

But, more often than not, anger is that devastating enemy that can destroy your life.

Calm down.

Take a deep breath.

Stem that flow of adrenaline coursing through your veins.

Yes, it’s exhilarating. Yes, it feels like you’ve been wronged. Yes, your body wants out. But you’ve got to breathe.

Let it all out.

Hush that ringing in your head. It’s doing you no favours.

You are not your anger. You are not the beast hungering for revenge.

In contrast, you are the dove, majestic and powerful.

Take flight. Loosen the chains that shackle you to the present.

It will not be easy.

The red hot tongue of anger will lick your insides, refusing to release you from its vice-like grip.

It will tunnel your vision.

It most certainly will constrict your chest.

But unclench that fist. Unmesh those teeth. Widen those narrow slits the anger has forced your eyes to become.

Bite back that harsh tirade.

Blink away the tears.

One breath. And another. And another.

This is how you defeat the monster.
