Uber’s $70 billion valuation in context

The New York Times are reporting that Uber are raising yet another $1 billion in venture capital, at a valuation of $60–70 billion.

Uber are the World’s most valuable VC-backed company by quite some distance, yet the news that they could be valued as high as $70 billion, means they would completely be operating in a league of their own when it comes to how much these companies are worth.

To put this into context:

While the rate and amount of capital that Uber is raising is unprecedented even in the U.S, it still presses home the difference both in valuations and the ability to raise late-stage capital between the U.S and Europe.

Clarification: As Liam Boogar points out in response to this post, it’s not really fair to use Uber as a stick to beat Europe with when it comes to raising venture capital. Perhaps my original conclusion was not befitting of the point I was trying to make, which was more about how astronomical and aggressive Uber’s fundraising has been rather than how poor Europe’s has been.
