We should be encouraging fast and small failures in our kids. Allowing them to understand that failure is okay, failure will happen, and to learn from failure. We should support fast and small failure, so kids can learn incrementally, without devastation, and without fear. They’ll understand that success, and wanting to succeed, is built upon learning from failures, and not from being afraid to fail.

I think lots of people get hung up on the word ‘failure’ when what we’re actually talking about (and what we should be focusing on) is the learning.

We learn to walk by falling over a lot. We learn to talk by mangling words until they’re understandable. It’s weird how we expect to learn a new skill or do something different without falling over a bit first.

At best it can cause people to temper their aspirations and at worst it can cause people to retreat inside their comfort zones.

I think there’s a broader question here about whether our educational system is geared up to cope with a workplace that often doesn’t have a singular ‘right’ answer. Perhaps we should put more emphasis on how to source information and connect the dots.
