Final Idea- Choco-Fruit Cookie

I think this cookie is unique because it leaves behind a taste in your mouth that you can’t quite place. Is it fruity pebbles? Cocoa puffs? Is it even a cookie? What kind of monster would mix skittles and M&Ms? I’m that monster and I can tell you that it’s more delicious than you might think.

Recipe- For ingredients you will need sugar cookie dough. You can use premade mix which typically requires an egg and a stick of butter. You will also need a box of skittle and a bag of M&Ms.

Idea Generation- For idea generation I thought of cookies based on foods I recently ate such as the candy corn pretzel cookie or the cheese cookie. I also discussed with my friends about different food idea concepts to see what they thought would be the most interesting. It was really surprising to see just how many cookies out there already exist. Below are a list of the ideas I came up with.

Idea Test 1- One of the ideas I test was the concept for my cylinder cookie which would essentially be like a cookie version of a Twinkie. I have made yule logs in the past by rolling cake while it was still warm. The plan was to, much like a yule log, roll the cookie while it was still warm to form a cylinder but after trying to roll the first one it just broke into pieces. The image below is the piece that I didn’t try to roll because the first one didn’t work.

Idea Test 2- The second idea I test was pretzels and candy corn which came to me when I accidentally ate them both at the same time while snacking on them. As the cookies baked the candy corn actually melted. Once my fellow taste testers and I tried it we realized the flavor wasn’t very distinct and that a lot of the candy corn taste was gone. The cookie just tasted like a normal cookie with a little bit of salt.

Iteration- The Idea I iterated was a skittle and M&M combination cookie. Something I quickly learned from the first batch of cookies was that I needed to make them smaller. I made 5 giant cookies with dough that was supposed to make 5 dozen. This made the bottoms burn and melted a lot of the ingredients. If you look to the left you can see the first one I tried to make. You can see on the right hand side the bottom of the cookie where a skittle once was.

After the first attempt, I made sure to use a lot less dough. I didn’t flatten the dough on the pan before I put it in the oven so the cookie ended up with was pretty thick and I still hadn’t quite gotten the cook time down, so the bottom was a bit burnt.

In the end I made a batch of cookies that were decently sized and not burnt. They have a very interesting taste that you can’t quite place as the skittles actually melt and what’s left behind in the cookie is the fruity essence of a skittle. That combines with the M&Ms to create a taste that’s hard to describe.

Tuesday 9/5 -Review the assignment goals from class and work on brainstorming cookie ideas.

Wednesday 9/6 -Create the blog post and find a few friends who would be willing to try my prototype cookies. Continue to brainstorm cookie ideas

Thursday 9/7 -Buy the cookie dough and all other supplies that I might need to actually make the cookies. Research how to bake cookies as well.

Friday 9/8 -Bake the first couple batches of cookies and have my friends taste them. See what their favorite is and what improvements could be made

Saturday 9/9 -Make the final prototype cookie and have it taste tested. If it succeeds write out the full recipe. Take pictures for the blog as well and make any notes that feel necessary.

Sunday 9/10 -Finalize the blog.

Monday 9/11 -Make a full batch of cookies to presented in class.
