Introduction to Metaverse Evolution Theory

Zuckerberg Speaks in Physical Reality, Native Inhabitants Peer in from the Metaverse

Zuckerberg speaking passionately about the Metaverse (source: official video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uvufun6xer8)

On October 28, 2021, Facebook, one of the ‘Big Tech’ giants (GAFA) with global influence, sent shockwaves worldwide when they announced their name change to ‘Meta’ and declared their commitment to promoting the ‘Metaverse,’ a new form of the internet.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated, ‘Our goal is to have the Metaverse used by a billion people and to facilitate transactions worth hundreds of billions of dollars over the next decade.’ He announced plans to invest over $10 billion annually into development of his Metaverse.
There are rumors that this move may have been an attempt to renew the company’s tarnished image due to a decrease in younger users and repeated scandals.
This shocking announcement was made during the keynote speech at Connect 2021, a developers’ event. In Japan, the news probably reached most people the next morning.
However, as Virtual Girl Nem, I watched it in real-time with my friends, but in the metaverse.

That day, after completing my usual day of work at home, I closed my business laptop, settled into my gaming chair, fastened sensors around my waist and ankles, and grabbed my controllers. I put on my VR goggles, and instantly, I was in the metaverse. I was in a room far larger than my room in physical reality — the traditional world governed by physical laws where all of you exist. This room was completely white. In the mirror was my avatar, a beautiful young girl, my late-night secret identity unknown to any of my real-life acquaintances. This was the start of my time as ‘Virtual Girl Nem.’ As always, I checked my movements, the sway of my skirt and hair in front of the mirror. I smiled, and checked my expression. I looked cute.
With a swift movement of my finger, a square screen emerged in the space in front of me, displaying a list of friends currently online in the metaverse. It seemed that everyone was gathering in one place tonight.
When I selected a friend from the list, I was instantly teleported from my room to another place where many friends were gathered. This place was a living room floating in outer space. Everyone was gathered in front of the TV, in various avatars, including beautiful girl characters. Stars spread out beyond the windows, with numerous gigantic planets floating about, yet there was gravity in the room. The windows weren’t fitted with glass, but we could still breathe. In the metaverse, all physical laws can be freely designed.

“Hello, Nem!” Everyone waved and greeted me.

“Hello! What’s everyone up to today?”

“We’re about to watch Facebook’s announcement about their ‘Metaverse’ project. They might even reveal their ‘next-gen’ device!”

Zuckerberg’s presentation started with what we considered to be boring content like a simple explanation of the metaverse for the general public and collaborations with famous games. Next, there was a demonstration of scanning yourself in physical reality to create a detailed 3D avatar, allowing you to go to the world of the Metaverse with the same appearance even when wearing VR goggles. Then, there was a demonstration of seamlessly merging physical reality with the Metaverse and greeting real friends from the virtual realm. Each one was technically impressive. However, even though we realized that these demonstrations were designed to be easily understood by the general public, all of us gathered there who had already become accustomed to living as our desired selves away from our real bodies unanimously protested in front of the TV screen, “This is not it!” Ultimately, there was no announcement for the next-gen VR goggles that metaverse inhabitants were most anticipating, and our virtual living room resonated with the booing of young girls.

Indigenous inhabitants of the metaverse watching Zuckerberg talking fervently about his Metaverse — VRChat

Zuckerberg spoke fervently about his Metaverse, explaining its concept and vision for its future expansion in a manner that even ordinary people could understand, all the while standing in the physical world in his physical body. Meanwhile, we inhabitants of the metaverse gathered in a living room in the form of avatars that resembled anime characters, watching Zuckerberg on television. This sight, like anime characters peering into real-world events, must seem surreal to those who have never been to the metaverse. You might not get it. But this is our daily life as inhabitants of this realm. The ‘virtual reality’ inside the metaverse is still ‘reality’ after all.

The history of Facebook is a significant chapter in the internet’s revolution which made Web 2.0 and social networking, now commonplace terms, virtually synonymous with the internet experience. Zuckerberg, who led this revolution, is now aiming for the “next internet,” his Metaverse, even at the cost of changing the brand that he built over 15 years. But what exactly is the “metaverse”? In this book, I, a native inhabitant living in the metaverse, intend to explain its true nature based on my own actual experiences, numerous interviews with other inhabitants, and survey data collected from users worldwide.

The Life and Times of Virtual Girl Nem

Metaverse Culture Evangelist Virtual Girl Nem — Neos VR

I am Virtual Girl Nem, the world’s oldest independent VTuber. I’m driven by the idea of “Becoming who you want to be in the virtual world.” VTubers who stream videos as virtual characters are now well-known, but I have been a VTuber since 2017, before the boom, groping my way through an emerging field and sharing tips on how to get started. Moreover, I spend my time in the metaverse outside of my VTuber activities, having recognized its potential and appeal from the experiences described below.
I believe that being a VTuber and living in the metaverse, where you can be “who you want to be,” represents a revolution in identity and communication. I explore these new possibilities on a regular basis and report on the culture and events of the metaverse through my videos and blogs. To promote this new world to the general public, I have appeared on television programs on stations such as NHK and have been featured in various media, including the French daily Libération, Asahi Shimbun, and Nihon Keizai Shimbun.

The incident that first opened my eyes to the allure of the metaverse was the “Coincheck incident” in 2018, the largest virtual currency theft in history.
I believe that to truly live as the “self you want to be,” it is not enough to simply virtualize one’s appearance and voice. Participating in economic activities as a virtual character is essential. From this perspective, I focus on virtual currency and blockchain technology as major themes, and my name Nem is partly derived from the virtual currency NEM (as I will explain in this book, economic activity is a prerequisite for the metaverse).
On January 26, 2018, the Japanese virtual currency exchange Coincheck was hacked from the outside, and NEM worth 58 billion yen (about 534 million US dollars) was stolen. The shock spread worldwide, and the burgeoning virtual currency market experienced its largest crash in history.
Amid the chaos, an anonymous white hacker named JK17 took it upon themselves to hunt down the perpetrator. By marking the perpetrator’s traces on the blockchain and consistently leaking details of their pursuit online, JK17 attracted global attention. Since JK17 used an anime-style beautiful girl character as her icon and the fact that JK means “high school girl” in Japanese, rumors surfaced that she might actually be a 17-year-old genius high school girl. This led to a flurry of fan art drawn in her support, creating a kind of festive atmosphere on the internet. Various media outlets, including NHK, inundated her with interview requests, but JK17 did not respond to any of them.
I wanted to share JK17’s dedication to protecting the world of virtual currency, so I quickly reached out, but JK17 said, “I don’t want to betray the dreams of those who support me, so if I can appear as a beautiful girl like Nem-chan, I will agree to an interview.” Consequently, I installed the recently-established VR environment and voice changer on JK17’s computer. I transformed JK17 into a beautiful girl in the metaverse space (we utilized the social VR platform Virtual Cast which I will explain in Chapter 2), enabling a public solo interview. Her modest and endearing personality, contrasting starkly with her justice-filled actions, received an overwhelming response.
Through this, I realized that the metaverse is extremely effective for interviewing anonymous internet celebrities who operate as their desired selves. These individuals can present themselves as living entities in a three-dimensional space, rather than being confined to flat text, all while preserving their anonymity. Inspired by this, I began to live-stream interviews with various people in the metaverse on my YouTube channel. As I explored various metaverse worlds through these activities, meeting famous internet personalities and intriguing residents living their everyday lives within them, I myself became captivated by the metaverse’s charm. Today, apart from when I’m streaming as a Vtuber, I spend my life as Virtual Girl Nem immersed in the world of the metaverse every evening.
Currently, I have been appointed the inaugural “VIVE Ambassador” by HTC VIVE, a major VR goggles developer comparable to Meta, formerly known as Facebook, and am also actively involved in PR activities for the latest VR technologies.

Analyzing 1,200 Metaverse Natives: The “Social VR Lifestyle Survey”

Social VR Lifestyle Survey

Social VR, a new living space for humanity in Virtual Reality (VR), is currently gaining immense attention as a manifestation of the metaverse. As explained earlier, social VR is a service that allows communication in a virtual world through the use of VR goggles. I believe that it most embodies the concept of the metaverse. In this world, entirely new norms and cultures are being born, ones that might be inconceivable in the physical reality we all live in.
With the global spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, which intensified from 2020, the number of social VR users dramatically increased. However, due to the high level of anonymity, very little was known about the realities and culture of life within this sphere.
To shed light on this reality through data, in August 2021, my friend “Mila,” Swiss anthropologist Liudmila Bredikhina, and I conducted a large-scale survey targeting social VR users worldwide. We titled it “Social VR Lifestyle Survey 2021”. By analyzing the 1,200 responses we received, we were able to illustrate the reality of their lives within this domain and subsequently published a report of our findings.
This comprehensive statistical analysis of social VR residents, not limited to any specific platform, is perhaps the world’s first of its kind. In Japanese, we named it a ‘census’ inspired by the hope that the metaverse, where people from all over the world gather, will become a ‘country without borders’.
The survey was conducted with the following principles:

  • Purpose: To reveal the reality of life for social VR users, whose numbers have rapidly increased since the spread of COVID-19.
  • Target: Users who have used social VR at least five times in the past year with VR goggles, be they English or Japanese speakers.
  • Methodology: A public survey conducted from August 23 to September 11, 2021.
  • Dissemination Strategy: We contacted various media outlets like Yahoo! Japan and ITmedia NEWS, as well as platform operators, among others, to widely encourage user participation in the survey.

We conducted detailed investigations into various aspects, going beyond mere usage statistics of the platform. This included exploring romantic relationships within the metaverse and delving into the phenomenon of “phantom sense” in VR, where one experiences sensations that should not exist. As a result, we were able to uncover some astonishing realities of the lives led by metaverse inhabitants.
After publishing the report, we presented our findings at the European VR technology conference VRDays Europe 2021 and Japan’s academic VR event Virtual Conference 2021, where we received significant feedback. In this book, we will introduce the survey results, along with discussions with and insights gained from various experts, based on the released data. Furthermore, we will explore the causes of these phenomena and discuss potential future possibilities arising from them.

The Purpose and Contents of This Book

This book aims to elucidate the true nature and future possibilities of the metaverse in its current state for a broad audience. We will present content enriched with the authenticity that only indigenous inhabitants can provide, backed by data. As the culmination of all my previous activities, I have written this book to serve as the definitive guide to understanding this virtual realm. I believe it will heighten your interest in the metaverse and stimulate your intellectual curiosity about what lies within.

The first half of the book provides a basic explanation of the metaverse.
In Chapter 1, we explore what the metaverse is, its origins, history, and specific definitions. We also clarify the differences between existing social networking services (SNS) and online games and dispel misconceptions about their relationship with AR/VR and NFT. We organize the key points of the “Three Revolutions’’ brought about by the Metaverse.
In Chapter 2, we explain social VR, viewed as the service that most fully embodies the metaverse based on the defined criteria. We compare various services from different perspectives, describe how they are used by different types of users and for what purposes, and provide detailed explanations of the challenges each service faces. We also discuss the expectations and concerns surrounding Meta’s new service, “Horizon Worlds.”
In Chapter 3, we introduce the technologies that support the metaverse, focusing on the fundamental technology of virtual reality (VR), and the three key elements that make it possible: VR goggles, tracking technology, and avatar technology.

The second half of the book delves into the lifestyle, culture, and future possibilities of the current metaverse based on interviews with numerous indigenous inhabitants, my own experiences, and the data from the “Social VR Lifestyle Survey.”
In Chapter 4, we discuss the first revolution, “identity cosplay.” In the metaverse, individuals can freely design their identities based on three axes: their name, their avatar, and their voice. We explore why people choose to live as a different version of themselves in the metaverse and why they might choose a different “gender.” We contemplate a new concept of identity, which has shifted from something to be accepted to something to be designed.
Chapter 5 covers the second revolution, “communication cosplay.” We observe the non-verbal communication elements crucial in the metaverse, particularly the reflection of psychological distance and the concept of “skinship.” We examine changes in interpersonal relationships and delve into the realities of romantic relationships and sex. We explore the new ways society might function with more fundamental forms of communication.
In Chapter 6, we examine the third revolution, “economy cosplay,” from both microeconomic and macroeconomic perspectives. I present the concept of the “dividual economy,” where the smallest economic unit transitions from the individual to the “dividual.” I also explain the shift from the traditional spatial economy constrained by the framework of the Earth to the hyperspatial economy that designs space itself, offering potential for further human development. We also consider the emergence of occupations in the metaverse and contemplate a new paradigm of economy.
Lastly, in Chapter 7, we discuss the liberation from the physical body. We explain the possibilities of a new sensation that indigenous inhabitants have begun to experience called “phantom sense” (VR sensation), revealing its fundamental principles and what individuals actually feel. We also discuss the expectations for haptic suits that replicate physical touch and the potential of “full dive VR” enabling complete sensory immersion. Additionally, we explore BMIs (brain-machine interfaces).

Metaverse: Frontier of a New Wilderness

Since Meta’s announcement, various media outlets have been featuring the “Metaverse” daily, and investors have been eagerly buying related stocks. As a resident of the metaverse myself, I believe it is a great thing that considerable capital is being invested, revitalizing the industry.
The current state of the metaverse is like a barren wilderness of the Paleolithic era, devoid of an established monetary economy. Instead, various forms of “magic” can be used. You can meet people beyond physical distance, summon desired individuals, transform into your favorite form, fly in the sky, and use features like Doraemon’s “Anywhere Door” (for instant teleportation) or “4D Pocket” (to summon items). To be frank, once you get used to it, physical reality becomes inconvenient. I firmly believe that as significant economic activities begin in the future, the economic center will shift from physical reality to the metaverse, giving rise to a vast economic sphere freed from physical constraints.
However, taming this wilderness is an ambitious undertaking akin to exploring new continents or planets. The missing pieces are plentiful. To be honest, it is by no means something that can be realized overnight, as some people may describe it. Those who pick up this book with investment expectations may be disappointed, but I am fine with that. Groundless and excessive expectations only lead to bubbles and tragedies. I have witnessed people shedding tears in the cryptocurrency realm due to such experiences, and I don’t want that to happen in the world of the metaverse. Hence, the only thing I can do is to relay the facts.
On the other hand, I am captivated by the pulsating beats of the potential future extending beyond short-term investment returns. The concept of the “metaverse” is not a mere buzzword recycled within the IT industry; it is the beginning of a grand transformation that will fundamentally shake our lives and values, something that could even be described as the “next internet.”

Homo Metaverse: Hints to Human Evolution

The metaverse is the new digital universe where we will live. Throughout history, humanity has continuously evolved over millions of years to survive in this universe where we were born. The revolution brought about by the metaverse is the ability to freely design the space in which we live. This signifies a reversal of the master-servant relationship between humanity and the universe. We, as humans, will redesign the universe itself to make it better suited for our lives. In a sense, it is an attempt to reach divinity.

In 2017, Israeli historian Yuval Noah Harari proposed the concept of “Homo Deus” in his book of the same name. He envisioned that through biotechnology, cyborg engineering, and AI technology, humanity would eventually overcome death and evolve into a new species, Homo Deus, possessing divinity. At that point, our conventional values tied to death and physical bodies would lose their meaning, and new norms and ethics, those of gods, would emerge.
I see the revolution brought about by the metaverse as a prelude to evolution. Of course, in the metaverse, we will not become immortal, and eradicating sickness and death in this physical reality is still in the distant future. However, within this limited scope, we can already achieve such possibilities in this digital virtual realm. We can redesign our bodies, our self-perception, our society, and the universe itself. It is a preliminary stage before becoming “gods” in physical reality. We may even say that the simulation to judge ourselves has begun.
Following Harari’s lead, I want to call the emerging “metaverse natives” who are quickly adapting to that world and exhibiting entirely new lifestyles and cultures a new human species called “Homo Metaverse.” Observing this mutation could provide a clue to the future direction of humanity.

In the barren wilderness that is still empty, we can nonetheless distinctly feel the breath of our loved ones — this is the raw form of the metaverse. What exactly is the metaverse? Who will we become in it? Where are we headed? As a single inhabitant of that realm, this is all I wish to convey through this book.
The metaverse has just begun and is in the midst of evolution. The reality is constantly changing even as we speak. What I can convey merely scratches the surface of this ever-changing world. However, if this book can shed light on a glimpse of the coming new era and serve as a catalyst for envisioning a better future, I would be delighted.
