I made a debut at the UN, even though I’m a virtual girl!

The United Nations international conference, “Internet Governance Forum Kyoto 2023 (IGF Kyoto 2023)”, discussing challenges of the internet, kicked off on October 8th in Kyoto City. This is the first time the conference has been held in Japan. On the opening day (Day0), Taro Kono, the Minister for Digital Affairs, and Junji Suzuki, the Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications, took the stage. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is also scheduled to appear.

Amazingly, my partner Mira and I, the virtual pretty girl Nem, were given an hour to speak in English at the Day0 event titled “Dialogue with Metaverse Residents — New Identity and Diversity.” I made a “Metaverse appearance” by showing up on the venue’s giant screen as an avatar from the metaverse. Admittedly, presenting in English on such a grand stage was nerve-wracking, but I elaborated on the realities and challenges of living in the metaverse, and the revolutionary changes it brings to identity and diversity. “Why are there so many female avatars?”, “Does the brain get confused living both in the physical reality and the metaverse?”, “What’s the threat of big tech companies?” were among the many questions posed, making the session quite lively. I hope this becomes a starting point for a global discussion on the rapidly expanding world of the metaverse.

I’ve released the video archive and the slides I used for the presentation, so please check them out. Also, in this article, I’ve summarized everyone’s feedback. Thank you so much for all your support!
