Temptation & Habit: Be Aware of Yours.
Everyone is motivated by different things. Some of us are tempted by money, fame, number of likes & followers on social media, some are lured by lust, shopping, and others by altruistic causes. Whatever the trigger, we have to recognize what moves us and use it to our advantage.
Every Thanksgiving weekend in America, approximately 150 Million people would spend close to $300 per person. Why? Temptation and Habit.
The temptation of a good deal and the habit of shopping whenever the mind perceives there is a sale the body obeys. The media calls Black Friday a ‘tradition’, but we should really call it temptation looking for satisfaction and fulfilment.
Advertisers, Retailers and Market Research firms fully understand how your mind works and they send the right triggers to get you into the spending mood. They recognize that if they use ‘comparative pricing’ or ‘relative pricing’ you will definitely feel the need and urgency (1-day sale!) to buy, without much thought or remorse. Which ad is more enticing?

I remembered working on a large Ad Campaign for a Fortune 50 client and they had to move a certain product. We did tests of one Ad copy vs. another Ad copy. The less time we gave people to make up their minds, the more we sold. It didn’t matter if we ran Ad#2 again and again, Ad#2 out-performed Ad#1 by over 100% each and every time.
What does habit have to do with how we spend? You see, temptation is the thought-trigger and habit is the action-taker. Once your mind is lured into thinking you will get rewarded (via purchasing a discounted TV), your body will be unable to resist. It is almost impossible. We become zombies and follow the masses to Walmart.
How do we break this cycle? Recognize the triggers. If we have a habit of shopping for unnecessary things, then stop walking around aimlessly at the mall! If we have a habit of smoking, then stop hanging out with friends that smoke. If we have a habit of eating junk food, stop walking down the snack aisles of stores or watching TV (with commercials). Easier said than done of course. It takes time to recognize your individual triggers, but once you can identify what triggers your temptations, you can become better and better at avoiding them.
Break the thought cycle and break the habits. Replace these with more desirable triggers and build new habits. Be awake, be aware, be responsible for your own thoughts and actions.
