I was a big follower of every iteration of 2Advanced and Kioken Studios back then. Just listening to Joshua Davis talk about his approach to the web was nothing short of enthralling.
I think, aside from the obvious Michael Bay effect that the websites provided, they were also such inspiration to a lot of web designers in training. Pioneering multi-disciplinary approaches to web design, setting aside the pure programming/photoshop process and approaching a web project as exactly that – a project, a multitude of different factors.
The “peak” is a very tricky thing to evaluate. It is highly unlikely any of us will produce something iconic. That said, this doesn’t mean you won’t delight users, fellow designers and yourself in the process.
Legacy is a hard burden to think about. None of us really want our lives to be the line between our birth year and year of death. That said, you do so much in that line, make so many people happy or emotional with the work and art that you create, or just spare someone trouble while using an app or service.
I think that emotional connection is the point and what I love about what I do. It’s not important for me to be remembered globally or have an impact. I just need to know it had an impact on the people I designed it for.
