Wrinkles around the eyes, forehead, cheeks, and lips are one of the first signs of ,but they are a normal feature of the human’s face. However, a lot of people are bothered by those visible fine lines across their faces because it makes them look tired and older.

If you’re among them, and you’d like to lessen the appearance of wrinkles across your face, Associated Dermatologists suggest that you might opt to get botulinum toxin or “botox” shots. This kind of injection relaxes certain muscles on your face which makes wrinkles less noticeable for a period of time.

How does Botox work to reduce wrinkles?

Botulinum toxin is produced by a specific type of bacteria which can be poisonous if taken in higher dosages. However, small doses are proven to reduce facial wrinkles.

Nerve signals that make the muscles contract are blocked once Botox is injected. When muscles are relaxed, the appearance of unwanted wrinkles is significantly reduced. However, it is important to note that this effect can only last for around 3–6 months. After which, muscles will start to move again making wrinkles come back.

How are Botox injections done?

Your dermatologist may first rub an anesthetic cream on the area to be injected to numb it. Only then, he or she will start injecting the medicine into specific facial muscles. This process only takes a few minutes, and can be done inside your doctor’s office or clinic. No need to cancel any activity that you have planned after the injection.

You may observe that some of your muscles are starting to relax 3 days after the injection and 1 week later, less facial wrinkles and lines will be visible. As mentioned earlier, the effect wears off in about 3–6 months.

Can you get Botox injections?

You should be healthy and of legal age, at least 18 years old before you will be allowed to get Botox injections. It’s also very important that you disclose your medical history to your doctor prior to getting Botox shots. This includes all prescription medicines, vitamins, and even herbal supplements that you take.

Some people may not be allowed to get it, and here’s a few common reasons why:

  • People with neuromuscular disease.
  • Pregnant and lactating mothers
  • Experiencing weakness in certain facial muscles
  • Have ptosis (drooping eyelids), deep facial scars, very thick facial skin, or uneven facial features
  • People who have skin problems near the injection area

Common side effects of Botox.

While it is undeniable that Botox can help lessen facial wrinkles, it may sometimes cause side effects or some health issues. Common side effects may include:

  • Headache
  • Eye irritation that may include redness or tearing
  • Redness or bruising in the injection area. This had been found to most likely happen if you take aspirin or blood-thinning medicine. It is strongly suggested to ask your doctor if you should stop taking the medication days before the injection.

Ptosis or drooping eyelids is a less common but more serious side effect of Botox. It can make it hard for a person to see but should go away as the effect of the Botox wears off.
