Recently Samsung announces its brand new flagship SoC Exynos 990 on Tech Day 2019 event at San Jose. According to Samsung, the SoC is for future smartphones, which will feature video, AI (Artificial Intelligence), and 5G communications.

The CPU is based on 7nm process technology using EUV (extreme ultra-violet), providing an extraordinary performance. The Korean tech giant claims that it offers a 20-percent performance boost over its predecessors. The CPU has 8 cores with a tri-cluster structure, which consists of two high-performance custom cores, two high-performance ARM Cortex-A76 cores, and four power-efficient Cortex-A55 cores. Moreover, it also features ARM Mali-G77 GPU based on Valhall architecture, which the company claims up to 20-percent improvement in graphics performance or power efficiency. However, the company didn’t provide any details on the clock speeds.

Exynos 990 includes a dual-core NPU (Neural Processing Unit) and improved DSP (Digital Signal Processor), which can perform over 10 trillion operations per second. The NPU enables localized AI, which processes the data on the device instead of on a network and a server, resulting in added security and efficiency, which makes AI features like facial recognition and scene detection faster.

Moreover, the Exynos 990 features a wide memory bandwidth that supports LPDDR5 data rates up to 5,500 Mb/s, a 120Hz refresh-rate display driver for reducing screen tearing and smoother animations for multiple display smartphones and an advanced ISP (Image Signal Processor) which can support up to six image sensors and up to 108-megapixels photography.

Samsung also introduced 5G Exynos Modem 5123, which supports all networks, including 5G’s sub-6GHz and mmWave spectrums along with 2G GSM/CDMA, 3G WCDMA, TD-SCDMA, HSPA, and 4G LTE.
