Obviously, you have to like Gordon Hayward as a player, but the concern here is depth. Boston had a REALLY deep bench, which made the difference in a large number of games. Without Olynyk, Rozier, Jerebko Zeller and Smart, the Celtics aren’t nearly as good. Suppose Hayward goes out for six weeks with an injury. Then what? Jaylen Brown is progressing nicely, but there’s still too much depth to make up to pay Hayward.
Gambling on 8 deep versus 12 deep is a real risk in the NBA.
