To answer my own question, I guess because Meera Reed is still alive. Had she died, Bran couldn’t have crawled back to the wall but maybe Old Nan got the legend wrong and one companion survived. Also, Bran appears to be able to subvert time somewhat — Ned Stark heard him call in a “vision” and Hodor became Hodor because of his limited time traveling abilities. Maybe the Bran that built the wall is in someway the same Bran today. I don’t know I am only 15% through the third book but it seems like his possible role is under discussed. I don’t go to message boards or fan sites so I am not talking about among Song of Ice and Fire scholars.
