I interviewed Jacques Eliard, a modern shaman, to share his thoughts about ‘being a Heretic’. I met Jacques by chance and now, I always meet him by choice. I enjoy his soft and powerful presence that makes me feel secure and reflective.

What makes you a Heretic?

A permanent desire to explore new ways, to challenge status quo. To never feel tied up by choices made by others, in different times, when facing different situations.

Tell me what is your biggest act as a Heretic?

A very mundane event, although very daring for me at that time: I chose to get out of a relationship. Then I realised it was the tip of an iceberg, and the momentum created led me to wake up from the social consensus. To challenge all these things which rule your life, although you never had the liberty to choose them. Then my whole life has changed. I realise it was a primordial choice.

What does it take to make a choice?

The only difficult choice was the initial one, although it may seem very ordinary — it was not. At the time it felt impossible. Deep inside, it really meant “from now on, you are going to live your dream”. I guess once I made the initial choice, it paved the way for all the other choices down the road. The only difficulty now is to remember that I made a choice to be Heretic, to remember my dream. That takes energy!

What advice would you give to future Heretics?

Dare to make their primordial choice, then be patient, and keep a good sense of humor. It’s a lifelong journey!
