I just jumped and I’ve been figuring out ‘what’s next’ ever since!
A New Breed of Heretics featuring Sally McCutchion
I met Sally by chance about a year ago, we learnt to know each other little by little like discovering hidden treasures in each other. Sally is direct and sensitive, wise and innocent, and always ready for the next adventure.
For me, she represents the “urban Heretic” and here is her interview …
What makes you a Heretic?
I didn’t know I was until you got in touch!
What makes me someone who is able to choose? For as long as I can remember I’ve been a fighter. I push against anything that makes me feel limited. To a certain extent, that has meant I’ve made life a bit difficult for myself at times but it has also meant I’ve lived outside of the box. I’m still figuring out how to create a life that really works for me but I’m well on my way now.
What is your biggest act as a Heretic ?
In terms of a tangible decision, it’s probably when I left my successful corporate career, just over four years ago. I didn’t have a plan as to what I was going to do. I didn’t have a clear path to what was next, I just jumped and I’ve been figuring out ‘what’s next’ ever since. In more intangible terms, I made a decision about twelve years ago to step outside of the box I felt I had been given. I started working with a mentor who helped me understand what patterns I was re-creating for myself. I have never stopped doing that work. It sometimes feels endless (maybe it is endless) but I am still committed to peeling back the layers of who I am, understanding them all and why they are there. I kinda think that this is what makes a heretic who they are. It’s not necessarily the external choices and decisions but the internal choice to really understand who you are so that the cultural conditioning can shift for us all.
What is difficult for you in making a choice?
Fear is the hardest part of making a choice. Is this right or wrong? I’m learning that there is no right or wrong but it doesn’t always feel that way. My value set has changed a lot in the last twelve months and my ‘old’ system for making a choice is no longer serving me. I’m learning new ways and that can be really scary. I am learning to trust my instinct more and more but my head still kicks in to try and reason my choice and that’s generally when I get into trouble i.e. when I stumble into fear.
What does it take to make a choice?
Trust. And not holding on to anything too tightly.
What advice would you give to future Heretics?
Don’t be afraid to feel pain.
Allowing yourself to feel pain enables you to step into something new because pains need to be felt to be released. We are not very good at allowing pain in today’s society. We prefer to pretend it isn’t there or cover it over with something else. Being with pain and then witnessing its release is a cathartic and life affirming experience.
What would be the word that represent the Heretic in you?
Power, strength, courage.
An infinite ball of incredible light and colour — whites, purples

In 2017, Sally began working on a podcast called Message From My Younger Self. The podcast is a passion project borne out of her own experiences of leaving a successful corporate career and finding her own way in the world. To support the podcast enquiry ‘Who do you truly want to be in the world?’ and for her own professional development, Sally became a student of the Creative Consciousness Coaching Academy and fulfils her sense of purpose as an Insights Coach for successful individuals.
