The 10th of November 2016, two presentations with demonstration were made at the ISO TC184 SC4 Industrial Day:

  • Implementing the digital thread using digital twins
  • MBE for Mfg : process implementing the digital thread using the digital twins

The two presentations results from the O3 (Operate, Orchestrate and Originate) DMDII (Digital Manufacturing And Design Innovation Institute) project, with as partners STEP Tools, ITI, Mitutoyo America Corporation and Systems Insight.

The presentations show how a set of open standards are used for implementing the digital threads using digital twins.

A video is available on Youtube, split in 7 parts:

Implementing the digital thread using the digital twin

  • Part 1: here the part related to the digital twin
  • Part 2: here the part related to the smart machining services
  • Part 3: here the part related to cutting tool optimization using digital twin
  • Part 4: here the part related to virtual metrology

MBE Mfg Process Implementing the digital thread using the digital twins

  • Part 1: here the first part of the presentation explaining the process
  • Part 2: here the part related to the smart machining services with a demonstration of Just In Time measurement
  • Part 3: last part of the presentation with wrap-up and questions related to extended enterprise and open standards based interoperability

These presentations illustrate the investment in the US concerning ISO STEP Standards (AP242: “Managed Model Based 3D Engineering” , AP238: “Application Interpreted Model for computerized numerical controllers”) for Digital Manufacturing, coupled with other complementary standards such as QIF (Quality Information Framework) or MTConnect. Digital Manufacturing emerging standards will contribute to the Through Life Cycle Interoperability the PLM processes have to establish within the emerging Dynamic Manufacturing Networks.
