Media Ecology

Media ecology is the study of information and media environments. It is based around the idea that human society is surrounded around technology. It transcends several subjects, including psychology and sociology. It is the interactions of communications media and technology, with human tendencies. Media ecology looks into how media of communication can affect human experiences, feelings and perception. Thus, it is the impact media environments have on people. Media technologies can have different impacts on different people. One effect it might have is that it enhances human’s knowledge about current news events, and things going around in the world, as media technologies are constantly available to acquire knowledge from. It can also enhance human’s ability to stay connection, not only with information, but also with people. They are able to interact digitally, and therefore maintain longer lasting connections. However media technologies can also negatively impact society’s ability to truly connect with someone face-to-face as individuals are becoming to comfortable communicating via media technologies. Media ecologies play a huge role in society today. Media technologies surround us, and it is unlikely whether we could actually live in a world without them. Today, media technologies are required to not only communicate and stay connected with people, but schools, university and other education institutions depend upon these technologies, as do majority of businesses. Humans’ rely so heavily on media technologies, that sometimes I believe that the extent of this reliance has not been acknowledged, and it could potentially be very dangerous.
