The National Finals Rodeo (NFR) is the premier rodeo event by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). The NFR showcases the talents of the PRCA’s top 15 money winners in the season for each event.

The NFR is held each year in the first full week of December at the Thomas & Mack Center on the campus of the University of Nevada Las Vegas in Paradise Nevada United States. (UNLV) and is aired live on The Cowboy Channel. Cowboy Christmas a cowboy gift show is held concurrent with the rodeo at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Since the rodeo uses ‘special dirt’ the dirt is stored on the UNLV campus for use in the next NFR. National Finals Rodeo 2023 Dates: December 7–16 2023. NFR Start Times: All start times in 2023 are 5:45 p.m. — 8:00 p.m. (PT). The NFR Open is an annual championship rodeo event of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) held annually in the United States. The event was previously known as the National Circuit Finals Rodeo (NCFR) from 1987 through 2021 before being renamed as the NFR Open in 2022. Qualification for the event comes via winning the season title or winning the average title at the regional circuit finals rodeos in bareback riding steer wrestling team roping saddle bronc riding tie-down roping barrel racing breakaway roping or bull riding. To qualify a competitor must compete in one of the 12 PRCA U.S. regional circuits; Montana Mountain States Wilderness Columbia River California Turquoise Texas Prairie Badlands Great Lakes Southeast and First Frontier. At the NFR Open competitors go through two longer performances to compete for eight spots for the semi-finals. The semis and the finals are in sudden death format. When the Oakland A’s make their move to Las Vegas and build their $1.5 billion, 33,000-seat stadium at the Tropicana site, organizers of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo said they will begin investigating whether it makes sense to move the rodeo from the lower-capacity Thomas &Mack Center to the new facility.
The 65th edition of NFR set for Dec. 7–16, considered the Super Bowl of rodeo, typically sells out months before the 10 days of Western entertainment is staged in early December.
Around 340,000 people come to Las Vegas for NFR, and only half of them have tickets to one of the performances. The others just soak up the Western ambience and attend dozens of other activities, including watch parties at 32 Las Vegas sites and two in Mesquite.
The A’s haven’t publicly released revised renderings of the stadium, but those who have seen them, including Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority President and CEO Steve Hill, say the revisions are spectacular.
There are no guarantees that the A’s have any appetite for hosting NFR when the stadium opens, but it’s something that’s on the mind of Tim Keener, president of Las Vegas Events, whose team does all of the local coordination of NFR and its spinoff activities.
