Cheems was once a little dog who was stolen by a circus and forced to perform in a stunt show. On the night of the Great Fire in London in 1666, Cheems managed to escape and save the life of a young girl, who became his friend. He lived with her for a year in a cottage in the village of Chiswick, and was content there. But when the girl died, he left to search for his family. He wandered for a long time, and became very thin. One night, in a ditch, Cheems was found by a girl named Patience, who fed him and took him home to her family. He became her best friend. Later, when Patience’s mother died, her father, who was a woodcutter, discovered that the house was on fire. He rescued Patience and Cheems from the flames, but he died from smoke inhalation. Cheems and Patience were now alone. After a while, a nice couple who lived nearby took them in. But the people who owned the cottage next to theirs were cruel to Patience and Cheems, and they were forced to leave. They went to London and found a new home, but life was hard. Then one night, Patience met a man who was as thin as Cheems, and as lonely as she was. The man was an old dog who had been stolen from his family and forced to perform in a circus. His name was Mr. Bunt. Patience and Cheems and Mr. Bunt became friends, and they all lived happily together.
