NFTs With Real Added Value
For online content creators, NFTs have been the inevitable topic of 2021. From pixelated images over incredibly terrifying monkey profile pictures to deceased celebrities and six-figure sales of an original picture. Clearly, NFTs and Web 3.0 have marked 2021 among other factors.
One reason, and probably the most common, is that NFTs are bought in the hope that someone else will pay a higher price for it later, thereby increasing their value. Therefore, the price of those NFTs is formed according to the increasing price expectations of all market participants. So, for most NFTs there is no real value except for the expectations.
However, any market that consists only of increasing price expectations will collapse in the long run. The reason is quite simple: As soon as the demand decreases, the price will fall. Due to countless new NFT projects, the offer is increasing sharply. Furthermore, the number of people willing to buy NFTs may stagnate for an NFT project, reducing the money supply, and causing price decreases. Interest could also spill over to other NFT projects in the long term. Therefore, NFT projects without a sustainable business model must collapse.
It’s the same behavior we see in stock market bubbles. The expectation increases, this attracts investors, at some point the market will no longer have enough new capital injected, which reduces demand, and expectations fall. This causes decreasing prices, or the bursting of bubbles.
Let’s Take a Look at the Problem With Trendy NFTs Before We Look at a Promising NFT Project
Most NFT projects start with no long-term value (1). For the NFTs to be sold, a lot of money is spent on marketing. This increases the interests of speculators (2). All NFTs are sold (3). At the minting date, the NFTs are sold very quickly, thus increasing the interest even more due to the hype. Over time, prices fluctuate and attention may rise, which can attract more speculators, causing prices to continue to rise (4). The peak is reached when interest in the non-long-term business model weakens (5). If prices start falling, buybacks can result in short-term price increases (6). However, over the long term, it’s just smoke and mirrors, so the market of the individual NFT project collapses (7).
This generalized example is based on our experience with NFTs and clearly shows that NFT projects are also subject to the general mechanisms of the market.
A sound business model, a long-term strategy, and a corporate vision are required for NFT projects to have a long-term impact.
